A 16-2 second-half run helped defending state champion Lyon County defeat Christian County 67-52 Thursday night in a boys’ high school basketball game at the Grind Session at Murray State University.
Led by the play of Nolan Coffman, Lyon (2-0) led 23-13 in the second quarter but a 10-0 run by the Colonels knotted the game. The key to the run was Coffman, who scored 12 of the first 16 Lyon points, going to the bench with foul trouble.
Darren Bigbee, Tom Johnson, and Aiden Jesse each hit three-pointers for the Colonels during the run and final minutes of the first half.
Bray Kirk and Cooper Collins hit 3-pointers and Lyon was able to push the lead to 31-25 at halftime.
Led by Kirk, who scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, Lyon again was able to get a double-digit lead before the Colonels (0-2) ralled to tie the game at 41 midway through the third quarter.
However, Lyon County switched to a 1-3-1 zone trap that caused trouble for the Colonels and led to a 16-2 run that put the game out of reach for Christian County. Isaac Defew started the run with a dunk and a three-point play. Defew finished with 15 points. Coffman had 14 and Carson Collins added 12.
Zyon Wharton, Zion Acree, and Jesse each scored nine points to lead the Colonels. Christian County will travel to Kenwood tonight as part of a girls’/boys’ doubleheader.
The girls’ game will air at 5:45 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm and will be followed around 7 p.m. by the boys’ game.
