The Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority cut the ribbon on its new Hopkinsville Clean Water Plant on Thursday after plans for the project were established in 2008.
The new plant is located in the footprint of the Hammond-Wood Wastewater Treatment Plant on Gary Lane. HWEA President, Derrick Watson shared that the old plant was established in 1983 and nearly all of those old structures were demolished to make way for the new plant.
The new plant is set to serve Hopkinsville through the year 2058.
Watson shared that the plans for the new plant were submitted to the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority in 2008 for funding. The authority approved the project in 2016 and Hopkinsville City Council approved it in 2020.
HWEA Director of Water, Daniel Lancaster explains that waste water across Christian County will be collected at the plant and will go through physical and biological treatments to remove impurities before it is released into Little River.
Then downstream the water is removed and transported to the Moss Water Treatment Plant. Operations at the new plant will be overseen by Plant Supervisor Stephen Greenwell.
