Veterans Honor Parade sees large crowds in celebration of local veterans

Chilly weather and the threat of raindrops couldn’t stop the people of Hopkinsville from turning out in celebration of our local veterans during Saturday’s annual Veteran’s Honor Parade.

It was a large turnout that lined the parade route from the War Memorial Building to the Christian County Justice Center, and the parade was filled with JROTC programs, local marching bands and, of course, the veterans. Many of those veterans made the march themselves, waving flags and chins lifted with pride.

During a ceremony at the Justice Center, Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight thanked all those who attended, saying it means a lot to our veterans to see the recognition from the citizens.

Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam agreed, saying you could have that it was a Christmas parade based on how many people lined the streets, and he encouraged everyone to thank a veteran for their service this weekend.

Military Affairs Committee Executive Director Shannon Lane says Veteran’s Day is about celebrating those who chose to run into danger to defend this nation, and about supporting them when they return home.

The Veterans Honor Parade is also a friendly competition between schools, from the Sidewalk Saluters competition and the JROTC Challenge—and this year was no exception, with the Joint Christian County High and Hopkinsville High Schools JROTC taking home the trophy.

Indian Hills Elementary had the most saluters at the event and University Heights Academy took home the award for Most Spirited.
