Christian County’s high school volleyball season came to a disappointing end Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Region 2 Tournament at Hopkinsville High School.
After winning the opening set 25-22, the Lady Colonels saw Union County rally in three straight sets and advanced 3-1.
The Bravettes, who have won six straight matches, will play Heritage Christian Academy in the championship at 6 p.m. today. HCA swept Caldwell County 3-0 in the other semifinal match.
Union led most of the first set before the Lady Colonels went on a 4-0 run to take a 21-19 advantage. Christian County finished off the Bravettes in the opening set with two straight aces by Skylar Kirby.
In the second set, the two teams traded leads throughout before Union (15-7) took control on two straight kills by Serena Oba. Union would go on to win 25-19.
In the third set, Atwell had two straight kills to push the Lady Colonels to a 10-5 lead before Union rallied to tie the game 18-18. A 5-1 run pushed the Lady Bravettes to a 23-19 and they would eventually win 25-23.
The Lady Colonels (13-18) came out strong in the fourth set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. However, the Bravettes were able to chip away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 12-12. The two teams traded leads several times. The match was tied for the last time at 22-22 before Union scored three of the next four to win 25-23.
Christian County coach Sam Self said her team played hard and they were disappointed not to be advancing.
Skylar Kirby led the Lady Colonels with 13 kills and four aces. Kaidence Atwell added 11 kills and three blocks and Emma Webster provided three blocks.
