Bowling Green a tough match up for Colonels

The Christian County Colonels’ football opponent tonight is full of superlatives and deservedly so.

Hopkinsville High School graduate Mark Spader brings his Bowling Green Purples to the Stadium of Champions for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Purples 5-1 and are the top-ranked team in Class 5-A, according to the Bluegrasspreps.com Poll. They are the No. 2 ranked team in 5-A, according to MaxPreps.

Senior quarterback Deuce Bailey leads the team. He has thrown for 1,451 yards and 21 touchdowns while only tossing two interceptions on the season. Junior wide receiver Trevy Barber is his favorite target, with 29 catches for 535 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Purples are scoring at a 41-point clip, but have scored at least 49 points in their last three games.

Defensively, Bowling Green only has given up 48 points all year, and 35 of those came in a first game loss to Class 6-A power Frederick Douglass.

None of this is lost on Christian County Coach Ethan Atchley, who said this Bowling Green team could be one of its strongest.

Christian County enters the game at 0-5 and has lost its last 11 games dating back to last season. In the last seven games of this series, the Purples have outscored the Colonels 299-20.

Tonight’s game was originally scheduled for Friday night, but moved to tonight. Air time for tonight’s game is at 6:30 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm.
