Hopkinsville High School’s Wade Foster negotiated the weather and the Owensboro Country Club golf course to shoot one of his best scores of the season Tuesday at the Region 2 Golf Tournament.
Foster carded a 72 and qualified for the first round of the State Golf Tournament next week, which on his home course at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club.
His performance was good enough for a third-place finish behind Owensboro’s Jax Malone, who shot a 70, and Daviess County’s Grant Broughton, who had a 71.
Owensboro won the team competition with a 300 and Daviess County was second with a 323. The top two teams and top 10 individuals not on those top two teams qualify for the first round of the state tournament.
Hopkinsville finished ninth as a team with a 347.
Isaiah Wood shot an 87, followed by Henry Riggs (91), Ryan Martin (97) and Matt Baker (104).
Christian County took 13th and was led by Aiden Lewis, who finished 34th overall and missed making the next round by four shots with an 84. Drew Fincham had an 87, followed by Peyton Hilton (94), Tay Martinez (98) and Jaedon McMillan (104). The Colonels had a team score of 363.
University Heights Academy did not have enough players for a team score, but Hayden Hunt narrowly missed the cut to the next round, finishing 30th overall with an 83. Cal Givens finished at 85 and Courtland Gibson had an 87.
The tournament was halted at 6:30 p.m. on Monday due to several weather delays and resumed Tuesday morning.
Heritage Christian Academy golfers Brad Powell and Cruz Egbert finished Monday before play was halted. Powell finished with an 85 and Egbert had a 97.
Other golfers advancing to the next round as individuals included Luke Hardin and Cy Tudor, of Muhlenberg County; Union County’s Cam Girten; Ohio County’s Shawn Cotton; John William Wathen and Luke Estes of Owensboro Catholic; Madisonville-North Hopkins’ Jake Witherspoon; Dec Lewko of Hancock County; and Hopkins County Central’s Lucas Rambo.
