For Hopkinsville Community College’s annual Constitution Day Celebration, HCC History Instructor, Luke Bendick will be spotlighting Henry Clay who served as the U.S. Secretary of State from 1825 to 1829 and his views of the Constitution.
According to a news release, Clay was a leading 19th century American statesman and Frederick Douglass dubbed him as the most popular man in America. Clay was also known as “The Great Compromiser” for mediating conflicts, and serving in a variety of national positions over the course of 50 years.
Although he was born in Virginia, much of Clay’s political career took place in Kentucky and his law office is still standing in Lexington.
Bendick will be lecturing on Clay’s beliefs regarding the Constitution. Although the Constitution remains unchanged, Clay reportedly believed that its interpretation would change over time.
Along with the lecture, members of the Hopkinsville-Christian County League of Women Voters will be present to help Kentucky and Tennessee residents register to vote.
The celebration is set for noon on Tuesday in Anderson Hall inside of the Emerging Technologies Building. The lecture will also be live streamed on Facebook at Hopkinsville Community College.
