On August 21, 1955, members of the Kelly community reportedly had a close encounter with extraterrestrial beings and the event has now become known as the Kelly Green Men Encounter. On Wednesday Visit Hopkinsville will be hosting its inaugural Alien Invasion Day to remember the strange encounter.
Visit Hopkinsville Executive Director, Amy Rogers appeared on WHOP on Monday and shared that on the day of the encounter, the Sutton family arrived at the Hopkinsville Police Department and claimed that they were visited by little silver men that hovered above the ground.
Rogers says she has always been fascinated by paranormal occurrences and is excited to recognize a piece of Hopkinsville’s history while providing some community fun.
At the invasion day festival, Rogers says they will have a dunk tank, face painting, story times, a batter walk, a costume contest, food trucks and vendors. Rogers also shared that Geraldine Stith Sutton, the daughter of Elmer Sutton who was one of the people at the encounter, will be in attendance to share what she learned about the encounter from her father.
The festival will conclude with a showing of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” Rogers shared that Steven Spielberg the director of the movie came across the Kelly Green Men Encounter and it partly inspired the movie.
Alien Invasion Day will take over the Hopkinsville-Christian County Convention and Visitors Bureau on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. More information about the festival is available on Facebook at Visit Hopkinsville.
