Visit Hopkinsville, the Literacy Council partner to host adult spelling bee

Visit Hopkinsville and the Christian County Literacy Council is coming together to host the Big Bee Adult Spelling Bee in August to spotlight the importance of literacy and encourage some friendly competition.

Amy Rogers the executive director of Visit Hopkinsville says the idea for the Big Bee came after Hopkinsville hosted the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee the past couple years and people asked if there was an adult spelling bee. After seeing many people interested in an adult spelling bee Rogers says she thought it was a great idea.

Rogers says she brought the idea to Francene Gilmer the executive director of the Literacy Council and she was on board. The adult spelling bee is also a fundraiser, with all the proceeds going toward the literacy council.

Entering the competition costs $20 and those interested in competing can enter by visiting the Hopkinsville-Christian County Convention and Visitors Bureau or clicking the ticket link available on the spelling bee’s Facebook event page.

Besides the adult spelling bee being a fun event, Rogers says it emphasizes the importance of literacy and learning while connecting with the community.

The Big Bee Adult Spelling Bee is set for August 1 at 6 p.m. at the Hopkinsville Brewing Company. Registration is open until July 26 and is eligible for those age 21 and older.
