The City of Hopkinsville is looking to get even more people involved in the Lot Next Door program, in their ongoing efforts to clean up the city.
Appearing on WHOP, Coordinator Tyechia Walton the Lot Next Door Program is designed to cut down on or maintain the numerous vacant lots in the city limits by giving ownership to owners of touching properties.
She did clarify that the lots must be vacant to be a part of the program—if there is a structure on it, it would not qualify until that structure was removed.
The Lot Next Door program was established under Mayor Wendell Lynch in 2021 and looks to move the city’s nearly 1,000 vacant lots back into productive usage as a ‘sweat equity’ program where residents may pay a fee and take ownership of a vacant lot.
They are given the deed to the property following a 12-month period, during which the owner has appropriately maintained the property.
Walton gave a success story about the program, with Cross Point Ministries, who were able to gain ownership of a vacant lot that they will now turn into a parking lot for use at their location on Smith Street.
