First Hometown Hero banner is unveiled honoring Bob Freeman

To honor those in the community who served in the military, members of Hopkinsville and Christian County government and the County Military Affairs Committee gathered to unveil the first Hometown Hero banner spotlighting Christian County native Colonel Bob Freeman for 30 years of service in the military.

The banner stands along Fort Campbell Boulevard across from TC Freeman Gate, which honors Freeman’s late wife Clarissa TC Freeman for her work with the military. Freeman says his military career was happenstance and did not expect it to be permanently honored with a banner. Freeman’s career began at Murray State University’s ROTC Program and he retired as the Garrison Commander of Fort Campbell.

Freeman now serves as a member on the Military Affairs Committee.

Christian County Judge Executive, Jerry Gilliam says Freeman’s journey is marked by bravery and selflessness and his achievements also reflect on the values of the community.

Military Affairs Committee Director, Shannon Lane says they will continue posting the Hometown Hero banners they have on hand on every third light post leading down Fort Campbell Boulevard to Hopkinsville. The next banner to be posted will spotlight George Oliver for his service. Oliver is the husband of Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver.

Once Oliver knew that the Hometown Hero banners were going to become a way to honor local veterans, she says she jumped on the opportunity to honor her husband. Oliver says she is also happy to join Cadiz where city officials are also posting banners honoring those who served in the military.

Those who want to honor a retired service member close to them with a banner can do so by visiting hopkinsvilleky.us/heroes and filling out the form.
