Christian County Public Schools starts summer food program

To ensure children in the county have access to healthy meals during summer, the Christian County Public School System has announced their Summer Feeding Program which started Monday morning.

School system Superintendent, Chris Bentzel appeared on WHOP on Monday and shared that Christian County High School, Hopkinsville High School and Freedom Elementary School will be open at breakfast and lunchtime from Monday through Friday to provide meals for children between the ages of 2 and 18 years old.

Meals will be served at Christian County High School from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon and at Hopkinsville High School and Freedom Elementary School from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon.

Along with offering daily meals, Bentzel says starting on Tuesday they will be offering five-day meal bundles.

On each Tuesday through June, meal bundles can be picked up from Christian County Middle School starting at 11 a.m. and from the Virginia Street Baptist Church parking lot starting from 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

On each Wednesday through June, meal bundles can be picked up from Gordon Park in Crofton starting from 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and from First Baptist Church in Oak Grove starting from noon to 12:45 p.m.

In July, meal bundles will continue on Tuesdays at Christian County Middle School starting on July 9. July meal bundle schedules for the other locations will be announced at a later date.

Meal bundles are for children between the ages of 2 and 18 years old, adults are required to sign for the meals and only one bundle per child is allowed. Having a longer summer break than normal, Bentzel says they want to serve as many children as they can through the free program.
