Saturday brings the return of Takes Kids Fishing Day and kids and families will flock to Jeffers’ Bend Environmental Center in the hunt for Big Jeff.
This annual tradition is a community favorite, letting children who may not normally get the chance to fish be able to do so—they can fish along Little River or at the pond at Jeffers’ Bend off of Metcalfe Lane in Hopkinsville. Organizer Diane Croney-Turner says the festivities kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, so make sure you get there a little early to find a good fishing spot.
It’s $2 per person if you register advance, but still only $3 per person if you register the day of. Croney-Turner says they’ll also have water activities that day, so make sure you bring along some towels.
There will be prizes handed out in the fishing and casting/reeling competitions, but they’ll also be giving out door prizes starting at noon.
And of course, everyone is angling to catch Big Jeff, an oversized catfish that is released into the waters of Jeffers’ Bend, though it’s also likely a previous Big Jeff is still swimming around. Some of the water events include a water slide, water exercises with the Hopkinsville Fire Department, a water obstacle course and more.
