The Kentucky Governor’s Derby Art Exhibit invites artists from across the state to submit art pieces spotlighting state scenery, landmarks, people and much more. The 2024 exhibit centers around the theme of “Commonwealth Landscapes,” and a painting by artist Linda Pierce of Hopkinsville was selected to be in the display.
Pierce is a local freelance artist with nearly 40 years of experience in the art field. She runs the Chalice Gallery out of her home where she takes commissions and teaches painting lessons. Pierce says she has never received formal art training and pursued higher education for biology with the idea of working in the veterinarian field like her father.
After working multiple jobs, Pierce says she decided to follow her art dreams when she settled in Hopkinsville and describes it as a childhood dream coming true.
Pierce’s piece, “Capitol Appeal” is a 24 in. x 18 in. acrylic portrait painting of the Kentucky State Capitol. Pierce says the painting is based on a photo of the Capitol she took several years ago for a commission.
Pierce is no stranger to having her art selected for the Governor’s Derby Exhibit. She says since around 2015 and each year since she has had a piece in the exhibit.
Despite having multiple pieces displayed in past exhibits, Pierce says she is honored to be a part of this year’s exhibit.
Pierce’s painting along with works of art from artists across the state will be on display in the State Capitol Rotunda until July 1 for the Governor’s Derby Exhibit.
