The Hopkinsville chapter of the NAACP is hosting their annual Freedom Fund Gala on Saturday where local high school seniors will be awarded academic scholarships and former Kentucky State Representative Charles Booker will be the keynote speaker.
NAACP Chapter President, Terri Redwine says graduating seniors from Hopkinsville and Christian County High Schools were invited to write essays about the history and the importance of the NAACP. At the gala, Redwine says the students will be recognized for their essays and receive $500 scholarships.
Redwine also shared that the scholarship essay serves to inform students about the origins of the NAACP.
Redwine shared that the organization was able to raise funds for scholarships from ad sales for their souvenir book, “Bridging our Community,” which is set to spotlight community organizations, businesses, churches and much more. Redwine says the book should be available for purchase by the time of the gala.
Looking toward next year’s NAACP scholarship cycle, Redwine says with funds from book purchases and gala tickets, she looks forward to offering more scholarships in the future. Along with providing more support for students, Redwine says the NAACP is working toward being more service oriented and present in the community.
The Freedom Fund Gala is on Saturday, April 27 at the Pioneers Complex. Tickets cost $50 and Redwine says only a few tickets remain so those interested in attending can call 804-536-2033.
