Sanctuary invites community to Denim Day art display

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Sanctuary, Inc. has been hosting events to raise awareness and share what resources are available to assault survivors and to conclude the month the nonprofit is hosting a Denim Day art exhibit.

Zirconia Vansauwa from Sanctuary appeared on WHOP and talked about what they have in store for the 25 anniversary of Denim Day and how the day originated. Vansawua shared that Denim Day began after an Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was allegedly wearing tight jeans, and in response to the case women in the Italian Parliament wore denim to stand in solidarity with the victim.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the campaign, Vansauwa says they are hosting their Decorate your Denim initiative where over 16 organizations across their nine-county coverage region decorated a pair of jeans with empowering messages and have them on display at their establishment.

Vansauwa says all the jeans will be exhibited at Hopkinsville Community College starting on April 22 with a reception at noon and will remain on display until April 26.

Denim Day is on Wednesday, April 24 and Vansauwa encourages the community to put on their denim.
