April is national Fair Housing Month, and to make sure the community is aware of their rights as renters, homeowners and landlords, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Human Rights Commission is inviting the community to their Fair Housing Workshop.
2024 marks the 56th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, a civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 that made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful.
Commission Executive Director, Raychel Farmer says the workshop will feature multiple speakers and panels focused on the housing act, code enforcement, eviction laws, realtor insights and more.
The theme of this year’s Fair Housing Month is, “The ‘Act’ in Action.” Farmer says they are incorporating the theme into their workshop, by focusing on actions that can be taken to ensure housing opportunities remain fair in the community.
Farmer encourages those who are not aware of their housing rights to register for the event. Farmer says a key part of her job is making sure the community is aware of their civil rights.
The commission’s Fair Housing Workshop is set for April 20 at the Pennyrile Area Development District Office at 300 Hammond Drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and breakfast and lunch will be provided. Those interested in attending can register here.
