The Christian County Jail announced that they have established their first ever K-9 unit to combat the distribution of narcotics and illegal contraband in their facility.
A news release shares that Deputy Jailer Matthew Newby is the handler of narcotic detecting K-9 Hamer a Belgian Malinois and the pair make up the newly established K-9 Unit with the purpose of maintaining high safety and security standards in the jail.
Jailer Adam Smith says during his campaign he stated that he was committed to creating a safe jail for staff, inmates and the community. The K-9 unit will perform routine checks of visitors, incoming packages, vehicles and areas around the property and cell searches to maintain a drug-free environment.
Smith says they hope the K-9 unit will serve as a deterrent to inmates and visitors who might otherwise attempt to introduce drugs into the jail. The K-9 unit began their duties on March 18.
