Firefighter trapped in roof collapse while fighting blaze in Greenville, not injured

No one was injured in a structure fire on Muhlenberg County on Monday, but a firefighter was trapped for a short time after the roof collapsed while he was fighting the fire.

According to the Greenville Fire Department, crews responded to the 4200 block of KY 171 for a residential structure fire and upon arrival, found flames coming from the structure. Work began immediately on knocking down the blaze, with no occupants located inside of the building.

While firefighters were inside, a structural collapse of the roof occurred, trapping a crew member—a mayday was immediately declared and other firefighters were able to quickly free him from the residence.

Six firefighters were evaluated and cleared by EMS on the scene, including the trapped fireman, with none requiring a trip to the hospital.

The home, which was determined to be currently vacant, was a total loss and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
