Legislators talk session, advocacy at League of Women Voters event

It was a good turnout to the Coffee with Our Legislators event hosted by the League of Women Voters on Saturday at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library.

It was a chance for community members to ask questions and bring up concerns and ideas regarding legislation in the Kentucky General Assembly. At the top of the priority list for the League is expungement for convicted felons, restoring to them the right to vote. A bill that would automatically expunge eligible crimes after 3 years is up for consideration, and Representative Thomas says he thinks it has support and he would certainly vote for it.

The Road Plan garnered some discussion, with Representative Dossett and Thomas discussing price points and timelines for the project at Lovers Lane near where the new high school will be located.

Senator Westerfield reassured the audience that calling the legislative hotline or emailing their legislative emails about bills they’re concerned about or want to have their attention works. He says advocacy is important, even if you think it won’t work.

The topics ranged widely from the CROWN Act to the budget, from animal rights and vehicle registration for the deaf and hard of hearing, from school safety to how the legislative process works in Frankfort and everything in between.
