Members from the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Christian County appeared on WHOP to invite the community to CASA 101 where they can learn about what the organization does and how to support their mission.
CASA is a national association that serves to support children going through the court system who may have experienced abuse or neglect and do not have a permanent home. From the local organization, Program Executive Director Kyra Bailey and Board member Donna Johnson spoke about what volunteering with CASA looks like.
Bailey says anyone can be a volunteer, but they do need to be over 21 years of age and undergo a background check.
Volunteers would be responsible for supporting and advocating for children who are in the court system. Right now, Bailey says in Christian County there are around 190 children who are in the court system and they are serving 33. Bailey says the children they are serving are having their needs met, but there are still many others that need help.
To engage the community, Bailey says they are hosting their first CASA 101 session where those interested can learn more about CASA and what they do.
Bailey says she plans to host one CASA 101 session each month. Along with the informational session, Johnson talked about their upcoming Super Hero Fun Run fundraiser. Johnson says children can participate and are encouraged to dress up like super heroes.
Tickets to the run cost $10 for children and $25 for adults and will be hosted the Hopkinsville Greenway Rail Trail on April 20 at 10 a.m. The CASA 101 session is set to be hosted at the CASA office on 515 Weber Street at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
