Focusing on their volunteer needs and recent changes, Alisa Barton from the Hopkinsville Salvation Army appeared on WHOP on Monday to share how the nonprofit is continuing their work and how the community can help.
One of the biggest changes set to occur for the Salvation Army is the closure of their thrift shop. The thrift shop is set to permanently close on March 8. Barton describes the thrift shop as their year-round fundraiser, but with declining sales, operating the thrift store has becomes less sustainable for the nonprofit.
Barton says they will still provide clothing assistance to those in need and are looking for volunteers to help them establish a clothing closet where those in need can access gently used clothing items. Until the permanent closure of the thrift store, Barton says they are having a liquidation sale.
Focusing on volunteers, Barton says they are looking for more volunteers for their Soup Kitchen as they have had an increase of those they serve in the community. In a day, Barton says they serve around 135 meals to those in need.
When their volunteer numbers are low, Barton says they are unable to open up the Soup Kitchen and can only serve to-go meals, but with volunteers they are able to fully open.
In regards to recent changes, Barton shared that the nonprofit’s office is now located in the same building as their Soup Kitchen and the space has been called the Life Navigation Hub in order to better interact with those in need.
