With district attendance lines being recently redrawn, the Christian County School Board approved a grandfather policy for some students who may be affected by the revision at their workshop meeting on Thursday.
Along with approving the policy the board were presented with updates regarding alternative education programs such as Bluegrass Learning Academy, the Virtual Learning Academy, Cumberland Hall and the Newcomer Academy. The Board also recognized 11 district teachers that received national board certifications.
The grandfathering policy applies to students that will be fifth graders, sophomores, juniors or seniors during the 2024-2025 academic year.
The policy was originally brought to the board at their January 18 meeting where it was passed on first reading however there was discussion as to which students should be included or whether the policy should be revised to apply to the siblings of grandfathered students.
On Thursday, Pupil Personnel Director Melanie Barrett went over the policy and shared that the rules will only apply to the grandfathered student and not siblings as well.
Under the policy, Barrett says a grandfathered student can be dismissed from a school if their attendance, grades or behavior are poor and transportation to and from school will be the responsibly of the student’s parents or guardian.
Under the policy fifth-graders in the next academic year will be able to attend their current school regardless of rezoning lines before they transition to middle school. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors in the next academic year will be able to attend their current school regardless of rezoning lines until the consolidated Christian County High School opens.
