KSP releases details on officer-involved shooting in Marshall Co.

Kentucky State Police have provided an update on the investigation into an officer-involved shooting that happened in Marshall County on January 9. 

According to a news release, preliminary investigation has revealed that Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Spears was patrolling when he saw what he believed to be a theft in progress at a construction site on Harold King Drive in Benton. 

When Deputy Spears stopped to check on the vehicle and its occupants, a male suspect—later identified as 43-year-old John B. Ross of Paducah—allegedly pointed a handgun at the deputy and fired. Deputy Spears returned fire, striking Ross.

Ross was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released.  The deputy was not struck by any shots. 

Ross is now facing charges of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and felony theft by unlawful taking.

A second suspect at the scene that night, 35-year-old Kevin Sorensen of Paducah, was charged with felony theft by unlawful taking. 

Deputy Spears has been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with the policies of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
