An inaugural student showcase was hosted at Thursday’s Christian County School Board meeting and will become a monthly presentation serving to highlight student achievements.
On Thursday, students from Hopkinsville High School and Christian County High School shared their experiences from the 2023 Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA). The KYA is a program that invites students from across the state to learn more about state civics by acting as a model government and proposing laws.
District Gifted and Talented Teacher, Shannon Slate introduced the students and shared that beyond getting a glimpse into how government works, students are able to learn about a wide array of issues and practice their critical thinking skills.
From Hopkinsville High School, Charlie Maddux, Andrew Mayes and Joshua Glover shared the bill they passed into law at KYA surrounding prison reform. Maddux shared that the law would create rehabilitation programs in prisons to help inmates overcome addiction, mental health issues and work to decrease the amount of repeat offenders.
From Christian County High School Jesslyn Sharkey, Bella Fowler and Odyssey Palmer passed a crown act into KYA law. Fowler shared that the crown act would prohibit hair based discrimination in schools and workplaces.
While explaining the bill Fowler shared an instance where one of her friends was wearing a headwrap and told to take it off as it was seen as a hat.
The next student showcase is set for the board’s February 1 workshop meeting.
