Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight appeared on the WHOP Early Bird Show Friday morning and talked all things construction, renovation and more dealing with property in the city.
Efforts to demolish hazardous and dilapidated buildings and structures in the city limits continues, this time with bids being taken to take down the old Walnut Street Stadium. As someone who played there when he was a kid, Mayor Knight says it’s time to be rid of structure that’s become dangerous, while still honoring its history and paving the way for more opportunities at the Boys and Girls Club.
Speculation is also abound at what will become of the space that once housed the historic Phoenix Building in downtown Hopkinsville—the mayor says that’s up to the owners of the property, but he’s hopeful they can work together to figure something out that will benefit downtown.
He says they also continue to strategize on what can be done with the L&N Depot, trying to find different ways they can renovate the building one step at a time.
Then, over on Pardue Lane, Mayor Knight says they’re looking to start work soon on a park in that area, and it’s all a part of improving Hopkinsville as a whole.
Knight says its all part of his “Growing Home” plan to clean up Hopkinsville and make it safer and improve quality of life—part of that endeavor is moving code enforcement responsibilities to the Hopkinsville Fire Department.
