HFD urging fire safety as temperatures drop

With the temperatures starting to drop as we head into the winter months, the Hopkinsville Fire Department is giving some advice on how to stay fire safe.

Public Information Officer Payton Rogers and Inspector Nathan Stewart appeared on WHOP recently, and they say there’s several measures you can take to keep your family and your home safe this winter.  Rogers says if you’re using a space heater, make sure it is plugged into a proper power outlet and keep it well away from furniture or other fabric items.

Stewart says its also wise to sleep with your door shut, as it can help prevent the spread of fires that might start in the house from something like decorations.

Rogers says to not underestimate how much keeping your bedroom shut can help—it could save precious time while the fire department responds.

They also advised to never use an oven or a stove to heat your home, and make sure to regularly change the batteries in your smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors, as they’re your top line of defense in the event something does catch fire.
