Proceedings continued to January in Clearman Court murder case

Proceedings continue to be delayed in the murder case against Bobby Spikes, as the special prosecutor looks to remove herself from the case and things remain up in the air concerning the investigation in Trigg County.

Spikes appeared alongside public defender Eric Bearden and Commonwealth’s Attorney Maureen Leamy, who informed the court she received a notice that special prosecutor Kathy Senter had relieved herself of her duties in that capacity. Spikes himself clarified there was a conflict, as he had been priorly represented by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Greg Cortese, and Judge John Atkins urged them to explain it to Senter.

Things also remain unclear in Trigg County—Spikes is accused in the December 2021 fatal shooting of Stanley Bussell on Clearman Court and is also facing possible indictment in Trigg County in the death of 34-year old Candace Marcel of Hopkinsville. Leamy informed the court she was told several months ago that the Trigg County Commonwealth’s Attorney did intend to pursue an indictment against Spikes, but that hasn’t occurred yet.

Judge Atkins set a pretrial conference for January 3, urging Leamy to determine the status of the Trigg County investigation, as proceedings have been delayed several times in this case already.

Bearden says he will likely file some motions as well, as he has already entered a motion for a speedy trial.

Hopkinsville police allege that on December 8, 2021 Spikes and his girlfriend called Bussell to a home on Clearman Court to work on a vehicle and that’s when he fatally shot him in the head.

Bussell’s body wasn’t discovered until Marcel was found dead in an abandoned vehicle on Cerulean Road in Trigg County and a search warrant was served at Marcel’s Clearman Court home.

Spikes and Marcel had been in some type of relationship and had once lived together, though they were no longer sharing a home, according a detective who testified at a hearing in December of 2021.
