Madisonville police charge man with burglary

The Madisonville Police Department has charged a man with third-degree burglary and more following investigation into an active burglary on Dulin Street Sunday.

According to the police report, officers responded to 200 Dulin Street for reports that a suspect had forced his way into a home around 5:20 p.m. and when officers arrived on scene, they located Elijah Shirley standing nearby, who reportedly matched the description of the suspect. Officers recognized him from earlier in the day, when he had been trespassed from a local gas station.

Investigation reportedly revealed damage to the storm door, exterior door and door frame of the residence, and inside was a mattress and several items in a back bedroom that Shirley allegedly said belonged to him.  He denied breaking into the building and said he had been hired to work there, but the owner disagreed.

Shirley was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief and criminal trespassing.
