Smalls formally sentenced to 15 years for arson, assault

Charles Smalls, the man who recently pled guilty to his role in relation to a house fire in Oak Grove in 2022 that injured a woman, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday.

He appeared alongside defense attorney Stephanie Mize, who told the court that Smalls feels real remorse for his actions, and is going to do what he can to address his struggles with alcohol while incarcerated.

Smalls had been originally indicted first-degree arson and first-degree assault for the house fire on Zachary Street that seriously injure his wife, but he entered a guilty plea to the amended charges of second-degree assault domestic violence and third-degree arson.

Judge John Atkins upheld the recommended sentence and sentenced Smalls to 15-years in prison.

Smalls intentionally started a fire using lighter fluid in a home on Zackary Street in April of last year following an argument with his wife. He would exit the residence, leaving his wife behind inside, and she would sustain serious injuries.
