Housing, repair of a cellphone tower in southern Christian County, strategic planning for further growth and are all in the works for Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam.
Speaking with WHOP Monday morning, Judge-Executive Gilliam says he has stayed plenty busy so far this year, as he and his administration work to address issues in the community and develop communication with area partners. That includes the five cities in the county, and Gilliam says he meets with the mayors of those cities often, where they discuss what problems they’re facing and how they can help each other out.
One thing that all five communities are working on is bringing more housing to the county as whole—along with childcare, housing is one of their top priorities.
That’s becoming even more need as renovations to barracks are set to begin soon on Fort Campbell, meaning many soldiers will be looking for a place to stay in the meantime.
In an update for southern Christian County near Lafayette, where a cellphone tower recently collapsed, affecting service in that area, Gilliam says they are working with AT&T and other agencies to get the problem addressed as quickly as possible.
The Judge-Executive’s Office has been in frequent contact with officials on Fort Campbell, to further develop their relationship with the post, as roughly 34 percent of soldiers who leave the military stay in Christian County. Judge Gilliam says that shows that Christian County is an attractive place, and needs to grow in order to help those families and others that want to live here.
