After kicking off on September 7 with a mural unveiling, Hopkinsville’s Big Read festivities continue this week with activities spotlighting the poetry book “Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude” by Ross Gay.
Pennyroyal Arts Council Director Margaret Prim appeared on WHOP to share what events the Big Read has in store for the community and the history of the event in Hopkinsville.
Prim says this their ninth in a row year too have received a National Endowment for the Arts grant allowing for Big Read events to take place in the community. The Arts Council was one of 62 organizations in the nation to receive the grant, and Prim says she was excited to be able to host and organize Big Read events.
For this week, three Big Read events will be hosted starting on Monday at 5 p.m. with a discussion of Gay’s book hosted by Hopkinsville Community College English Instructor, Christa Granderson at Milkweed Health and Harmony Emporium. Prim says this event is one of many book discussions on their event itinerary and free copies of Ross’ book are available at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library.
Free copies of the book are available at the Alhambra Theatre, Pennyroyal Area Museum, Hopkinsville Community College Library and Planters Bank Hopkinsville locations.
Following Monday’s book discussion there will be an adult collage workshop at the Public Library on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and those interested can register by calling the Public Library front desk at 270-887-4262.
Closing out the events for September is History on Tap: Gratitude and Cayce on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Hopkinsville Brewing Company where work by Edgar Cayce. Born in Christian County in 1877, Cayce claimed to be a clairvoyant and the discussion will center on Cayce’s work that explored the way emotions and attitudes manifest in positive and negative ways.
