Congressman James Comer represents the First Congressional District of Kentucky, and things are busy in Washington D.C. with a possible government shutdown looming and the Farm Bill up for consideration.
The big question at the moment is if Congress can come to an agreement on a spending bill by October 1—Congressman Comer says things look bleak at the moment, with no compromise currently in sight. He says he supports his colleagues wants for cuts to government spending, but he also understands that a shutdown is good for no one, especially military service members, so he’s doing everything he can to keep a shutdown from happening.
He says he thinks a compromise could be reached if they could get bipartisan support to secure the southern border.
The Farm Bill is up for a vote this year and Congressman Comer says he’s confident it will have the votes it needs to pass, maintaining much needed programs for Kentucky farmers.
SNAP Benefits and other food assistance programs fall under the Farm Bill, and the congressman says he supports much of those programs, as they help keep children in need fed—he believes the Farm Bill will pass by the end of the year.
On the subject of the Russia-Ukraine conflict that continues in Europe, Comer says he does hope that Ukraine prevails over Russia, but he does not support providing them further funding with American dollars.
