Annual walk serves to raise funds for suicide awareness

The sixth annual Hopkinsville Out of the Darkness Walk will be kicking off this Sunday to bring a focus to suicide awareness and raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Awareness.

Walk Co-Chair Valerie Singleton played a vital role in the inception of the walk in Hopkinsville after she saw her cousin participate in a suicide awareness walk and wanting to bring the event to Hopkinsville.

The first walk was hosted in September 2018 and Singelton says it has been a space for people to come together and support one another while working toward decreasing the stigma surrounding suicide.

To support the American Foundation for Suicide Awareness the Walk also serves to raise funds for the Foundation. With the goal of raising $15,000 so far community members have pitched in just over $14,000.

Singleton says the funds going toward the Foundation will support research efforts as well as survivor and family reach out.

The Out of the Darkness suicide awareness walk will be at Pardue Lane Trail and will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Along with the walk there will be food on hand and mental health informational booths.

Those interested can register at afsp.org or in person at the walk.
