MLB Update 7-25-23

>>Shane Bieber Lands On 60-Day IL

(Cleveland, OH)  — The Cleveland Guardians will be without their ace for a while.  Shane Bieber was moved to the 60-day injured list on Monday.  The starter hasn’t pitched since July 9th after suffering an elbow injury caused by inflammation.  Manager Terry Francona says the former Cy Young award winner didn’t have a setback while rehabbing, but he won’t be ready until mid-September.  Bieber is 5-and-6 this season with a 3.77 ERA in 19 games.  He has a career 3.26 ERA in 130 major league starts.  The 28-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the year.

>>Braves Trade For Two Relief Pitchers

(Undated)  — The Braves are adding a pair of experienced arms to the bullpen prior to next week’s trade deadline.  Atlanta swung a pair of trades on Monday to acquire right-hander Pierce Johnson from the Colorado Rockies and southpaw Taylor Hearn from the Texas Rangers.  The NL-leading Braves sent pitching prospects Tanner Gordon and Victor Vodnik to Colorado in exchange for the 32-year-old Johnson.  The former Rockie is 1-and-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 39 innings pitched this season.  Atlanta gave up cash considerations for Hearn, who was designated for assignment last week.  The 28-year-old has made 25 starts in the big leagues.

>>Cardinals Finish Strong To Defeat Diamondbacks

(Phoenix, AZ)  — The Cardinals scored five runs in the top of the ninth to surge past the Diamondbacks 10-6 in Arizona.  Paul Goldschmidt tied the game up with an RBI single, Lars Nootbaar helped take the lead with an RBI walk, and then Tyler O’Neill cracked a three-run double to help St. Louis snap a three-game losing skid.  Giovanny Gallegos earned the win with one-and-a-third scoreless innings of relief.  The Cardinals are fourth in the NL Central at 45-and-56.

>>Cardinals Shift Roster To Make Room For Wainwright

(Phoenix, AZ)  — The Cardinals are making some roster moves.  After activating starting pitcher Adam Wainwright from the 15-day injured list, the team sent catcher Ivan Herrera and pitcher Zack Thompson down to Triple-A Memphis.  St. Louis also selected the contact of left-hander Andrew Suarez from Memphis, shifting reliever Ryan Helsley from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day list to make room for Suarez on the 40-man roster.  Steven Matz starts for the Cards against Arizona tonight.

>>Reds Fall To Brewers In Walk Off Series Opener

(Milwaukee, WI)  — The Reds fell to the Brewers in a 3-2, walk off defeat in their series opener from Milwaukee.  Alexis Diaz got the loss after giving up the game-winning single to Christian Yelich in the bottom of the ninth.  Elly De La Cruz crushed a two-run homer for Cincy, which had its five-game win streak snapped.  Cincinnati is second in the NL Central at 55-and-47.  The series continues tonight.
