(England)  — Three players are tied atop the leaderboard after the first round of The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Course in Hoylake.  Tommy Fleetwood, Emiliano Grillo and amateur Christo Lamprecht each shot a five under 66 in the opening round of the tournament.  Brian Harman, Antoine Rozner and Adrian Otaegui are in a three-way tie for fourth-place after finishing four under par.  Defending champion Cameron Smith is tied with several players for 48th at one over par.

 

>>Team USA Set To Face Vietnam In Women’s World Cup Opener

 

(Auckland, New Zealand)  — The two-time defending FIFA Women’s World Cup champions are set to begin their title defense on Friday night.  Team USA is set to take on Vietnam in their World Cup group stage opener at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.  It will be the first time that the U.S. Women’s National Team has gone head-to-head against Vietnam.  The U.S. will also face off against Portugal and the Netherlands in Group E play.  Team USA is going for its third straight Women’s World Cup title.

 

>>NASCAR Cup Series Battles At Pocono Raceway For High Point 400

 

(Long Pond, PA)  — The NASCAR Cup Series field is rolling into the Poconos this weekend for the HighPoint.com 400.  Martin Truex Jr. is going for back-to-back wins after earning a victory in the Crayon 301 from Loudon.  The driver of the number-19 car dominated the race, leading for over 80-percent of the contest.  Truex Jr. is first in the Cup Series standings while Will Byron, Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch round out the top five.  The green flag waves from Pocono Raceway on Sunday.

 

>>NHL Veteran Nate Thompson Retires

 

(Undated)  — A journeyman NHL forward is hanging up his skates for good.  Nate Thompson announced on Thursday he’s retiring from the league in a social media post.  The 38-year-old last played for the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2021-22 season and spent time with eight other teams in his 15-year career.  The Anchorage, Alaska native was originally selected by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round of the 2003 draft.  He then made stops with the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets.  Thompson scored 65 goals and had 164 points over 844 games.

 

>>Nashville SC Battles Colorado In Leagues Cup

 

(Nashville, TN)  — Nashville SC is back on the pitch this Sunday for the first match of the Leagues Cup.  The club will take on Colorado at GEODIS Park.  All MLS and LIGA MX clubs are participating in the tournament.  There are no ties in the competition as each team will earn a point before heading to a penalty shootout for a chance at securing an extra point.  Nashville is also in a group with Toluca.

 

>>Ex-NU Football Players Detail Hazing Allegations

 

(Evanston, IL)  — Several former Northwestern football players are coming forward with allegations describing a culture of hazing within the program.  The ex-players detailed the emotional, physical, and sometimes sexual abuse they suffered while playing football for the Wildcats.  High-profile civil rights attorney Ben Crump and a team of lawyers representing more than 15 ex-student athletes are planning a lawsuit.
