(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Pirates are signing the number-1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft to a record-breaking deal. Paul Skenes agreed to a deal which includes a 9.2-million-dollar signing bonus. The contract with Pittsburgh shatters the previous record held by 2020 number-1 draft pick Spencer Torkelson, who signed an 8.42-million-dollar deal with the Detroit Tigers. The former LSU pitcher went 12-and-2 last season to go with a 1.69 ERA. He also took home College World Series Most Outstanding Player honors after helping the Tigers take down Florida to win the school’s seventh title.

(Phoenix, AZ) — Major League Baseball will be broadcasting Arizona Diamondbacks games for the rest of this season. The league will take over for Diamond Sports Group, which asked a bankruptcy judge to end their contract with the ball club. Diamond Sports Group is a Sinclair subsidiary that operates under the name Bally Sports, which had already terminated its deal with the San Diego Padres earlier this season. D-backs CEO Derrick Hall said in a statement that the team looks forward to “providing unprecedented access to our exciting team” and “greatly expanded reach of new households.”

(Atlanta, GA) — The Braves are locking up their veteran backstop. Atlanta is signing catcher Travis d’Arnaud to a one-year contract extension worth eight-million dollars through the 2024 season. The deal also includes an eight-million dollar club option for 2025. The 34-year-old is batting .265 with eight home runs and 23 RBI in 38 games this season. d’Arnaud has teamed up with All-Star Sean Murphy this season to form one of the game’s top catcher tandems for the first-place Braves.

(Atlanta, GA) — The Braves failed to put an end to their losing skid in a high-scoring contest at home. Atlanta lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 16-13 in National League action at Truist Park. Austin Riley led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and seven RBI in the losing effort. Orlando Arcia and Sean Murphy each drove-in a pair of runs in Atlanta’s third straight loss. Raisel Iglesias was charged the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, through one-third inning of relief. The Braves fell to 61-and-32. They will send right-hander Charlie Morton to the mound for the start tonight opposite Arizona righty Ryne Nelson.

(St. Louis, MO) — The Cardinals wrap up their three game series against the Marlins with a game at Busch Stadium today. St. Louis has won the first two games of the series and is going for its first home sweep and second overall sweep of the season. The Cardinals haven’t announced a starter for today’s contest, but the Marlins are going with reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara.

(Cincinnati, OH) — The Reds fell to the Giants 4-2 in the continuation of their series opener from Cincy. Joc Pederson and Michael Conforto each drove in 10th-inning runs to lift San Fran to victory. Cincinnati then lost to the Giants 11-10 in the regularly scheduled game two of the series. Buck Farmer got the loss after surrendering two runs in an inning-and-a-third of relief. Cincy is now two-and-a-half games back of the Brewers for first place in the NL Central.
