MLB Update 7-06-2023

>>MLB Home Run Derby Field Set

(Seattle, WA)  — The 2023 Home Run Derby field is officially set.  The event will feature a rematch between Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez in the first round.  Alonso won the Derby in 2019 and 2021 before falling to Rodriguez in the semifinals last summer.  The top-seed in the event will be White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., who has mashed 25 home runs this season.  Other participants include Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia, Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena, Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman.  The winner of the Derby will receive a one-million-dollar prize.

>>Yankees Pitcher Suspended

(New York, NY)  — New York Yankees right-hander Jimmy Cordero is being suspended for the rest of the season for domestic violence.  MLB  commissioner Rob Manfred said the suspension is for violating the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.  Cordero, who’s 31-years-old, appeared in 31 games so far this year.  The Yankees said they “are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero.”  Cordero will not be paid during his suspension.

>>Angels’ Mike Trout Out 4-To-8 Weeks After Hand Surgery

(Anaheim, CA)  — The Angels are providing an injury update on Mike Trout.  Los Angeles manager Phil Nevin said the All-Star outfielder underwent a successful hand surgery on Wednesday.  Trout was placed on the 10-day injured list with a broken hamate bone in his left wrist.  Nevin added that the 31-year-old is expected to return in 4-to-8 weeks.  Trout suffered the injury in Monday’s loss to the San Diego Padres.  The three-time AL MVP was selected to his 11th All-Star team but said “it’s frustrating” to miss the game.

>>MLB Introduces Virtual Ballpark

(New York, NY)  — Major League Baseball is introducing a virtual ballpark. The pro sports league aims to give fans a virtual experience without needing to spend on tickets and travel. The virtual ballpark will open on Saturday and will launch with an online watch party that will include social media star JoJo Siwa, actors Skylar Astin and Adam Devine, and more. Participants will also be able to play mini-games during the livestream that are linked to real-time events at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

>>Hicks Error Spoils Cardinals Comeback

(Miami, FL)  — The Cardinals couldn’t finish off their five-run comeback during a 10-9 loss to the Miami Marlins at Loan Depot Park.  The Cardinals trailed by five entering the third inning before plating five runs in the frame to tie the game.  The teams went back-and-forth until the top of the ninth, when Jordan Walker smoked a two-run home run to but the Cardinals up by one.  However, Jordan Hicks air-mailed a throw into right field on a routine grounder during the bottom of the ninth, and two runners scored to give Miami the win.  Hick was charged with his fifth loss out of the bullpen.  Nolan Gorman added a home run in the losing effort.  The Cardinals are still in fifth-place in the NL Central at 35-and-51.  Jack Flaherty starts for St. Louis against Miami tonight.

>>Reds Take Down Nationals

(Washington, DC)  — The Reds rattled off 16 hits during a 9-2 win over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.  Elly De La Cruz was three-for-six with two doubles, a home run, and a stolen base in the victory, and Joey Votto also went deep.  Every player in Cincinnati’s line-up picked up at least one hit.  Graham Ashcraft surrendered just one run on seven hits in six innings to earn his fourth win.  The Reds have won seven of eight and sit atop the NL Central at 48-and-39.  They will send southpaw Brandon Williamson to the hill for the series finale against Washington this afternoon.
