Resolution possible for 2019 murder suspect

More time has been given to murder suspect Shakkory Willis, as his attorney works to resolve the case soon.

Defense attorney Eric Bearden represents Willis—who is accused in the 2019 fatal shooting death of Corvyan Thomas—and he informed the court that he has hope they’ll have a resolution soon.

Circuit Judge John Atkins set a pretrial hearing for September 6, saying if a plea agreement is reached then he’ll accept it at that time, but if not, they’ll set it for trial.

Willis is currently serving a 33-year sentence for first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor for his role in relation to a robbery on Short Bethel Street in 2019 that ended with Thomas dead and Dylan Stewart shot.

A jury found Willis guilty on those charges, but was unable to come to a unanimous verdict on the murder charge, resulting in a mistrial.
