MLB Update 7-04-2023

>>Aaron Judge Gives Update On Wall Crash Injury

(New York, NY)  — Aaron Judge is giving an update on his wall crash toe injury.  When asked when he’s getting back to playing, the New York Yankees captain told The Today Show this morning “hopefully soon” and said hopefully the All-Star break “will buy him a couple of days.”  Judge injured his toe when he crashed into an outfield gate last month during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Judge last played on June 3rd.

>>Mets Acquire Bullpen Help From Mariners

(Undated)  — The Mets are fortifying their pitching staff.  On Monday, New York acquired right-handers Trevor Gott and Chris Flexen from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for lefty Zach Muckenhirn.  Flexen had been designated for assignment by the Mariners last week, and Muckenhirn was designated for assignment by the Mets on Sunday night.  Gott is 0-and-3 with a 4.03 ERA across 30 appearances this season.  Flexen is 0-and-4 with a 7.71 ERA in 17 appearances with four starts, and Muckenhirn has appeared in just three games since making his major league debut.  The Mets also moved right-hander Edwin Uceta to the 60-day injured list.

>>Guardians’ Triston McKenzie Hopes To Return This Season

(Cleveland, OH)  — A Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher is hoping to return this season.  Triston McKenzie is dealing with an elbow issue and is working hard to avoid season-ending surgery.  The 25-year-old was diagnosed with a strained UCL, which often leads to Tommy John surgery.  Team doctors say McKenzie will continue to rehab over the next few weeks before throwing a baseball.  Guardians manager Terry Francona said by avoiding Tommy John, “It would give him a chance to pitch for us this year.”  The righty made just two starts this season after going 11-and-11 last year with a 2.96 ERA while striking out 190 batters over 191-plus innings.

>>Seventh-Inning Disaster Dooms Cardinals

(Miami, FL)  — The Cardinals gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh during a 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins at Loan Depot Park.  St. Louis led by two heading into the inning, but Yuli Gurriel hit a two-run double to tie the game.  Nick Fortes added a go-ahead single to put Miami up for good.  Andre Pallante was charged with his first loss in relief, while Willson Contreras went deep in the losing effort.  St. Louis remains in last place in the NL Central at 35-and-49.  Adam Wainwright takes the hill for the Cards against Miami this afternoon.  In other team news, St. Louis designated Oscar Mercado for assignment yesterday.

>>Reds Edge Nationals In Series Opener

(Washington, DC)  — The Reds edged the Nationals 3-2 in their series opener from DC.  Luke Weaver earned the win after surrendering both runs on six hits over five innings.  Joey Votto smashed a two-run homer while Alexis Diaz notched his 24th save of the season.  Cincy improved to 46-and-39 and is tied with the Brewers for first place in the NL Central.  The series continues this morning.
