Alpha Pregnancy Care Center and the Hopkinsville Fire Department are teaming up to bring a Safe Haven Baby Box to Hopkinsville.
Fundraising efforts are underway through the Alpha Pregnancy Care Center social media pages, and they’re looking to raise roughly $16,000 for the box and installation. There are only two Safe Haven Baby Boxes in western Kentucky, and the boxes help prevent infants from being unsafely abandoned. HFD Public Information Officer Lt. Payton Rogers says they provide a safe, anonymous way for a mother in crisis to surrender a newborn.
The box itself is climate-controlled and has an alarm that lets firefighters know the moment a child is inside so they can respond immediately.
Lt. Rogers says they’d much rather a mother bring her infant to a Safe Haven Baby Box than to an uncontrolled, hazardous environment.
The baby box would eventually be located at Fire Station One on Phillip Meacham Way. If you can’t donate online, checks can be sent to Safe Haven Baby Boxes, PO Box 185, Woodburn, Indiana 46797.
