Hopkinsville City Council members got an update on storm debris clean-up efforts at Thursday’s meeting of the Committee of the Whole.
Hopkinsville Solid Waste General Manager Richard Hopper says he and his staff have been working exhaustively since the severe storms in March that caused extensive wind damage across the city, putting down trees and impacting homes and businesses. He says they’ve hauled off over 18,000 cubic yards of debris to the landfill so far.
Mayor J.R. Knight says there are still a lot of trees and other green debris coming out of people’s backyards, so they’re having to double back to areas that have already been cleaned once.
Solid Waste staff have been pulling long hours in an effort to get both debris and regular trash picked up, and Hopper says they’re working as quickly as they can.
Hopper says he’s to be back to normal routine starting at the end of July, but they’ll have to see how debris removal is progressing in the meantime.
