>>Hockey Hall Of Fame Class Of 2023 Announced

 

(Toronto, ON)  — The latest additions to the Hockey Hall of Fame have been released.  Goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist, Tom Barrasso and Mike Vernon are all members of the Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2023.  The three netminders are joining former NHL center Pierre Turgeon and Canadian women’s hockey star Carolina Ouellette, as well as coach Ken Hitchcock and the late Pierre Lacroix.  The induction celebration is scheduled for November 13th at the Hall of Fame in Toronto.

(Cromwell, CT)  — Xander Schauffele will be looking to defend his title when the Travelers Championship tees off at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.  Schauffele won last year’s tournament after finishing atop the leaderboard at 19 under par.  The 29-year-old will be alongside Keegan Bradley and Emiliano Grillo in the first round.  Wyndham Clark is playing alongside Justin Thomas and Max Homa after winning last week’s US Open.  Will Gordon, Ryan Palmer and Taylor Pendrith will be among the first group of players teeing off round one.

(Omaha, NE)  — One team has locked up its spot in the College World Series championship.  The second-seeded Florida Gators scored a ninth inning run to take down TCU 3-2 in the semifinals in Omaha.  The Gators are back in the championship series for the first time since winning the national title in 2017.  Fifth-seeded LSU stayed alive with a 5-2 win over top-seeded Wake Forest in Game One of their semifinal series.  Tigers designated hitter Cade Beloso belted a three-run homer in the third to lift LSU to victory.  The teams will go head-to-head in a win-or-go-home matchup tonight for a spot in the championship.

 

>>Nashville SC Shut Out By Montreal

 

(Montreal)  — Nashville SC suffered a 1-nil loss to Montreal in the MLS.  Bryce Duke scored the game’s only goal in the 27th-minute.  Joe Willis made five saves for Nashville in the loss.  The club fell to 10-5-and-4 and is still second in the Eastern Conference with 35 points.  Nashville has a quick turnaround as the team heads to Columbus to take on the Crew at Lower.com Field on Saturday.

 

>>Hershey Bears Win 12th Calder Cup

 

(Palm Springs, CA)  — The Hershey Bears have proven once again that they are the best team in the American Hockey League.  The team won the AHL’s Calder Cup Championship Wednesday night, beating the Coachella Valley Firebirds 3-2 in overtime of Game Seven. Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre scored goals in regulation, with Mike Vecchione scoring the dramatic series-ender in overtime. Goalie Hunter Shepard was named postseason MVP and accepted the Jack Butterfield Trophy at the game’s conclusion. It’s the twelfth time in franchise history the Bears have won the Calder Cup — an AHL record. The championship marks the second Calder Cup for head coach Todd Nelson.

 

>>Penny Hardaway Suspended For Recruiting Violations

 

(Memphis, TN)  — Penny Hardaway is getting a suspension for recruiting violations.  The Memphis basketball coach received a three-game ban from the NCAA for in-home visits to a “highly rated men’s basketball prospect” back in 2021.  The league’s infractions panel said Hardaway and an assistant met with the high school junior at his home during two separate occasions.  The NCAA only allows visits with juniors at the player’s school.  The Tigers and Hardaway were also at the center of an 18-month investigation by the NCAA for violations involving James Wiseman and other prospects.

 

>>Former Steelers Linebacker Clark Haggans Passes Away

 

(Pittsburgh, PA)  — The Pittsburgh Steelers are mourning the loss of a Super Bowl champion.  The team announced on Wednesday that Clark Haggans passed away.  He was 46.  The outside linebacker helped Pittsburgh win Super Bowl 40 over the Seattle Seahawks in a 21-10 victory at Ford Field in Detroit. Haggans was part of a Steelers defense which ranked fourth in the NFL in yards allowed that season and played alongside college teammate Joey Porter. Haggans spent eight seasons with Pittsburgh before making stops with the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.
