MLB Update 6-14-2023

>>Nevada Senate Passes A’s Stadium Bill

(Las Vegas, NV)  — The Nevada Senate is passing a bill to help the Oakland Athletics build a 1.5-billion dollar stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.  The bill includes 380-million dollars in public funding for the project and was passed in a special session on Tuesday.  Two amendments were made to the original bill after discussions for the new stadium project were met with resistance from officials.  Among the changes are the use of a suite at the stadium for community groups, an annual 1.5-million dollar donation to the community and resources toward helping homelessness in Las Vegas.  The A’s relocation to Las Vegas is expected to be authorized by MLB owners.

>>Yankees Owner Stands By Struggling Rookie

(New York, NY)  — Anthony Volpe will be staying in the majors.  Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner spoke at MLB headquarters ahead of the owners meetings, and said the team has had “zero conversations” about sending the struggling shortstop down to the minor leagues.  The 22-year-old is hitting just .186 with a .605 OPS and nine home runs through the first 67 games of his big league career.  Volpe also ranks among the worst defenders at his position, tallying three outs below average.  Steinbrenner also said the team will be looking to add before the trade deadline, but did not specify whether they prioritized pitching or hitting.

>>Report: Giants, Cardinals To Play In 2024 Field of Dreams Game

(Birmingham, AL)  — The San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals are meeting in the next iteration of the Field of Dreams game.  The San Francisco Chronicle reports the game is expected to be played in 2024 at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.  Rickwood Field is the oldest professional ballpark in America and was home to Willie Mays’ Birmingham Black Barons.  Major League Baseball is not holding a Field of Dreams game this season as the site in Dyersville, Iowa is currently under construction.  The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds played in the game in 2022.

>>Cardinals Get Rocked By Giants

(St. Louis, MO)  — The St. Louis Cardinals are on a four-game losing streak following an 11-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Busch Stadium.  The Cardinals trailed by just a run through four innings before San Francisco struck for three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings.  Jack Flaherty was charged with his fifth loss after surrendering six runs in four-and-a-third innings, while Paul Goldschmidt had a pair of hits and an RBI in the losing effort.  St. Louis remains in last place in the NL Central at 27-and-41.  Jordan Montgomery starts for St. Louis against the Giants this afternoon.

>>Reds Hold On For Win Over Royals In Kansas City

(Kansas City, MO)  — The Reds held on for a 5-4 victory over the Royals in Kansas City.  Brandon Williamson earned the win after surrendering four runs, three earned, on seven hits over five innings.  Kevin Newman and Stuart Fairchild each drove in runs as part of a five-run second inning.  Cincy has won four straight games and is third in the NL Central.  The Reds will try to sweep the series tonight.  Ben Lively takes the mound while KC counters with Daniel Lynch.
