The Hoptown Hoppers players and coaches all met together for the first time on Memorial Day at University Heights Academy for their media day to be followed by their first practice.
For some players it was a reunion, as some players come from the same college or are from Hopkinsville, but for most there was a lot of handshaking and introducing going on at the event.
The Hoppers Media team also took pictures of the players in their jerseys that featured spotlights and fog machines.
First year head coach EJ Devarie was also in attendance as he will not be present for at least the first two games of the season since he is still working with the baseball team of University of Indianapolis as an assistant coach. They will be competing in the NCAA DII Championship Tournament in Cary, North Carolina starting on Saturday.
Coach Devarie spoke with WHOP on why he decided to take the head coach position with the Hoppers.
When asked if he was planning any team bonding exercises, Devarie made it clear that he was leaving that up to the players.
Although Devarie won’t be present for week one of the Hoppers, he mentioned that the game plan will be to test all the players on the field to see how they can play together on the field. Pitching coach, Mike Albin will take lead during Devarie’s absence, alongside the other assistant coaches.
With a roster of around 40 players, third baseman Gavin Baxter explained why he decided to be a part of this year’s team.
Pitcher and Hopkinsville native, Jacob Dilday also explained the benefits that he believes this Summer season will provide.
When asked what he would tell to someone who was debating on going to a Hoppers game or two this season, this was head coach EJ Devarie’s response.
The Hoppers will play their first game of the season on Thursday, June 1 on the road against the Bowling Green Pistons at 6:30 PM, and will play their first home game the following day on Friday, June 2 against the Paducah Chiefs at 6:30 PM.
