Fort Campbell officers remember fallen at Madisonville Memorial Day service

Two officers from Fort Campbell’s 101st Airborne Division were the keynote speakers at Madisonville’s Memorial Day service Friday morning, saying the holiday holds even more meaning this year.

Captain Kayla Walsh of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade says Fort Campbell is still mourning the loss of nine soldiers who died March 29 when two Black Hawk helicopters collided and crashed in Trigg County.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Vincent Marino says losing nine people he cared deeply about less than two months ago gives him a different feeling this Memorial Day.

He reflected on a time in his youth when he went to similar Memorial Day events, but in his innocence couldn’t comprehend the meaning of the occasion.

Mayor Kevin Cotton was also among those speaking at Madisonville’s Veterans Memorial, with the service also featuring the playing of Taps and a laying of a wreath to honor those who have died defending freedom.
