Arraignment was held Thursday morning in Christian District Court for the Indiana man charged with attempted murder of a police officer after he allegedly shot at law enforcement during a high-speed pursuit Wednesday morning.
Christian District Judge Foster Cotthoff entered a not guilty plea on behalf of 31-year old Cody Alire of Evansville and assigned him a public defender.
While his bond for the Kentucky charges is a half-million dollars, he is held without bond as a fugitive on outstanding warrants from Indiana.
The Kentucky State Police arrest citation for Alire says the pursuit began in McLean County and Trooper Michael Dennis caught up with Alire after deputies in McLean County lost sight of him.
Alire traveled south at a high rate of speed through Muhlenberg County and came into Christian County on North Greenville Road, later wrecking another automobile near the Lacy Dollar General. One person in that vehicle was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say Alire fired a gun at police multiple times during the pursuit, including in Hopkinsville before he wrecked out into a utility pole in front of the East Seventh Street Dollar General after Hopkinsville police used a tire deflation device on his car.
At least one of the rounds fired by Alire was toward an HPD officers setting up stop sticks, according to the citation.
Alire ran from the wreckage, but was soon caught and arrested.
He’s charged locally with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of attempted first-degree assault, 15 counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, receiving a stolen firearm, felony receiving stolen property, fleeing or evading police, speeding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
