A January murder trial was scheduled Monday morning for Mory Burse, the man accused in the 2021 shooting death of Devon Kendrick on Sharpe Street in Hopkinsville.
Defense attorney Ramon McGee requested an August trial date, but special prosecutor G.L. Ovey said his office would not be prepared by then, having just recently been appointed to the case and considering they have several murder trials before the end of the year in the 56th Circuit.
Christian Circuit Judge Andrew Self said he understands McGee’s desire to get to trial as soon as possible considering the length of time Burse has been incarcerated, but he ultimately scheduled trial to begin January 8 to allow both sides ample time to be prepared.
McGee says he’ll be renewing his motion to reduce bond between now and a August 21 pre-trial conference.
Burse is alleged to have used a 9 mm handgun to shoot the 48-year-old Kendrick multiple times in the torso and arms just before midnight July 28, 2021 at a location behind the East Ninth Street Dollar General on Sharpe Street.
