Trial date set for Oak Grove arson, assault suspect

Attorneys are going to attempt mediation in hopes of finding a resolution in the arson and assault case against an Oak Grove man accused of setting fire to a mobile home with his wife inside.

Fifty-two-year-old Charles Smalls is represented by Stephanie Mize, who requested a trial date Wednesday morning while she looks into mediation.

Judge John Atkins scheduled a trial for December 7 and 8.

Smalls is alleged to have intentionally started a fire using lighter fluid in a home on Zackary Street in April of last year following an argument with his wife.  He allegedly exited the residence, leaving his wife behind inside, and she would sustain serious injuries.

He is charged with first-degree arson and first-degree assault.
