Hopkinsville and University Heights double-header recap

In double header action, the University Heights Academy Blazers traveled to Tiger Field to take on Hopkinsville High School on Monday evening.

It was a tale of two games, as both teams took turns as far as coming out strong and then going flat in each of the games.

In the first game, it was all UHA as they scored 6 runs in the first 2 innings with 3 coming each inning. The Blazers would eventually score 2 more insurance runs with each coming in the fifth and sixth innings.

Pitcher, Ian Tyler provided some stellar pitching for the Blazers.  While playing the entirety of the contest, he retired 8 batters and only allowed 2 hits in the contest.

For Hopkinsville, they struggled in the first game and dealt with a lot of 3-up, 3-down scenarios, but a late surge came for the Tigers in the seventh inning, after Dylan Sweeney reached on base following an error and ended up scoring after a Lucas Kaetzel double. Kaetzel then proceeded to score after a Gavin Mitchell base hit.

Despite the loss Hopkinsville fed off of that 7th inning energy from game one and started the second game off with 2 runs. The Tigers also scored 3 runs each, in the third and fourth inning, and also added 2 more runs in the seventh.

J.J. Thompson had a impactful outing on the mound striking out his first 5 batters, and ended up finishing with 13 total strikeouts. Thomas Hallmark relieved and threw three strikeouts as well, adding towards a total of 16 on the game.

As both teams continue to prepare for the District tournament, Hopkinsville will travel to Madisonville-North Hopkins tonight while University Heights will also be in action this evening hosting Crittenden County.
